Dilip Shanghvi Career

Shanghvi started by assisting his father in his Kolkata-based wholesale dealership of mostly generic medicines. During this work, he considered producing his own drugs rather than selling those of others.
With a capital of INR 10,000, the 27-year-old Shanghvi finally opened his first manufacturing unit in 1982. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries was the name he gave his company.

The unit, which was in his home state of Gujarat and was just a short drive from Mumbai, only produced one psychiatry drug. However, Sun Pharma was able to acquire the American company Caraco Pharma by 1997 thanks to Shanghvi’s business acumen and drive. In 2007, Sun also bought Israel’s Taro Pharma. In 2012, Shanghvi resigned as chairman and CEO and appointed Israel Makov, formerly CEO of Teva Pharmaceuticals; Shanghvi was made director of management.

In April 2014, Sun, Ranbaxy, and Daiichi Sankyo agreed that Sun would take on $800 million in Ranbaxy debt and acquire all of Ranbaxy’s outstanding shares for $3.2 billion in Sun stock. Daiichi became Sun’s second-largest shareholder when the transaction closed in March 2015, making Sun India the world’s fifth-largest pharmaceutical company. He will continue to serve as a chairman and non-executive director of SPARC despite his resignation as managing director in May 2021.
