During the Holocaust, his father’s entire family was murdered. After the war, his Polish parents were sent to a Soviet labour camp, where he and his two older sisters were born. After that, in 1947, they came to the United States.

He worked as an intern at the New York Stock Exchange and Oppenheimer & Co. while in college, where his future brother-in-law, Jack Nash, would become president and chairman. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from New York University in 1970.
Englander specialised in the trading of convertible securities and options at Kaufmann Alsberg. He bought a seat on the American Stock Exchange when the exchange started listing options. In 1977, he established I.A. Englander & Co., a floor brokerage firm. Mulheren had recently filled in as a merchant for Ivan Boesky.
