Black held positions as managing director, head of the Mergers & Acquisitions Group, and co-head of the Corporate Finance Department at investment bank Drexel Burnham Lambert from 1977 to 1990.
Tony Ressler, co-founder of another private equity firm Ares Management, is his brother-in-law. Black has donated generously to arts organisations and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, in addition to his work in finance. He is also an art collector.
