In March 1951, David Cheriton was born in Vancouver. After submitting an unsuccessful application to the music department, he transferred to the University of British Columbia in 1971 as a mathematics student. Seven years later, he graduated from the University of Waterloo in Canada with a master’s degree and a doctorate in computer science. He spent three years as an assistant professor at UBC before moving to Stanford in 1982.

At Stanford, he met Andy Von Bechtolsheim and together they established Stone Frameworks in 1996, which they sold a year after the fact to Cisco Frameworks for $200 million. In 1998, Stanford PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin sought business advice from the pair. Before Google was incorporated, Cheriton and Bechtolsheim each invested $100,000 in the idea.

Kealia, a server manufacturer founded in 2001 by the duo, was acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2004. Arista, a cloud networking company, debuted on the NYSE in 2014 after being founded four years later. Prior to the listing, Cheriton-founded cloud software developer Optumsoft stated that it would sue Arista over an intellectual property dispute.
