About James Charles
James Charles Dickinson is a makeup artist and beauty YouTuber from the United States. Charles created a YouTube account while working as a local makeup artist in his hometown of Bethlehem, New York, and began uploading cosmetics tutorials. After a tweet displaying his makeup went viral, he became CoverGirl’s first male brand ambassador in 2016. Charles will host, direct, and co-produce the YouTube Originals reality competition series Instant Influencer in 2020. His online issues have included a widely publicized feud with fellow beauty YouTuber Tati Westbrook in 2019 and his sexting with underage males in 2021.
James Charles Family
Skip, a contractor, and Christine Dickinson gave birth to James Charles Dickinson on 23 May 1999, in Bethlehem, New York. Ian Jeffrey, his younger brother, works as a model. In 2023, it was discovered that Ian had not spoken to him in two years as a result of James’ grooming charges.
James Charles Education
He graduated from Bethlehem Central High School. James was bullied in school, but he grew a thick skin and didn’t let it bother him. He began practising makeup and hairstyling after graduating from high school in 2017. James honed his skill via practice and then began doing it on girls in his hometown. His perseverance eventually paid off.
James Charles Career
Charles started a YouTube channel in December 2015, where he started posting videos of beauty tips. In September 2016, a tweet showed him retaking his senior portrait with a ring light and cosmetics went viral. He became the first male brand ambassador for the cosmetics company CoverGirl in October 2016, when he was 17 years old. The appointment received a lot of positive feedback on social media. He made his public appearance in ads for CoverGirl’s So Lashy mascara.
In 2019, he had 10 million YouTube subscribers. His visit to Birmingham in January 2019 for the launch of Morphe Cosmetics’ second store in the United Kingdom caused traffic chaos in the city centre. Charles handled the makeup for Australian artist Iggy Azalea’s promotional graphics for her single “Sally Walker” in March 2019, and he also appears in the song’s music video.
Charles presented the inaugural season of the YouTube Originals reality competition series Instant Influencer, which debuted in April 2020 on his YouTube channel. At the 10th Streamy Awards, he received Show of the Year for his efforts on the show. YouTube stated in March 2021 that he would not return to host the show’s second season.
James Charles Controversy
In February 2021, a 16-year-old kid named Isaiyah said in a TikTok video that Charles groomed him by sending him nude images and forcing him into sexting with him despite his age. Charles responded to the video with a tweet disputing the grooming allegations and claiming that the child claimed to be 18 years old at the time. Other young boys accused Charles of sending them unsolicited nude images and forcing them into sexting with him in March 2021.
Charles released a 14-minute video titled Holding Myself Accountable in April 2021, in which he admitted to sending sexually explicit texts to “two different people, both under the age of 18,” but he denied knowing they were underage at the time. Charles described his previous actions as “reckless” and “desperate,” and stated, “to the guys involved in the situation, I wanna say I’m sorry.” I’m sorry I flirted with you, and I really apologize if I ever made you feel uncomfortable. It is totally inappropriate.”
