Introduction

Jimmy Carter is the 39th president of the United States and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Formerly a peanut farmer in Georgia, Carter served aboard a nuclear submarine in the U.S. Navy before rising to become one of the most powerful figures in American politics. In 1976 he won an election that saw him beat out incumbent Gerald Ford, thanks to his catchy campaign mantra “A leader, for a change.” 

He was also reportedly responsible for organizing monitoring systems that allowed citizens to track how their tax dollar was being spent. After leaving office following Ronald Reagan’s election victory, Mr Carter went on to establish and lead The Carter Center for Human Rights and Democracy, where fostering world peace has been among its top priorities.

Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, and sold peanuts at the age of eight. He attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology before gaining admission to the US Naval Academy. After graduating from the Academy in 1946, Carter served as an officer during the Cold War and completed his submarine training in 1952.

He then ran for public office and became known as a reigning leader since being sworn into the office of President in 1976.
