Michael Rubens Bloomberg is an American businessman, politician, creator and philanthropist. He is Bloomberg L.P.’s majority owner, co-founder, and chief executive officer. He was mayor of New York City for three terms from 2002 to 2013 and ran for president of the United States in 2020. Since June 2022, he has been the chair of the Defense Innovation Board, an independent advisory board that advises the United States Department of Defense on artificial intelligence, software, data, and digital modernization.
Bloomberg supported gun control, public health initiatives, and environmental protections while serving as mayor of New York. He also established public charter schools and rebuilt urban infrastructure. After the September 11 attacks, he also led a rezoning of large portions of the city, allowing for massive new residential and commercial construction. Bloomberg was born in Boston’s Brighton neighbourhood on February 14, 1942, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Bloomberg grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, and moved on from Johns Hopkins College and Harvard Business College.

Before establishing his own business in 1981, he began his professional life at the securities brokerage firm Salomon Brothers. After that, Bloomberg served as CEO and chairman for twenty years. He held office for three sequential terms, winning re-appointment in 2005 and 2009. Bloomberg developed a technocratic managerial style by pursuing policies that were socially liberal and fiscally conservative.
Bloomberg became the 108th mayor of New York City on 1 January 2002. He won a second term in office in 2009 and 2005. His first few months as mayor were difficult, with approval ratings as low as 24%, however, he gained and maintained high approval ratings over time. In the predominantly Democratic city, Bloomberg joined Rudy Giuliani, John Lindsay, and Fiorello La Guardia as re-elected Republican mayors.

Bloomberg joined Salomon Brothers, a major Wall Street investment bank, as a general partner in 1973. There, he headed equity trading and later systems development. In 1981, Phibro Corporation purchased Salomon Brothers. The new management then fired Bloomberg and paid him $10 million for his equity in the company.
