Cera was chosen to play Larrabe Hicks in the two-season Canadian children’s program I Was a Sixth Grade Alien in 1999. He also starred in the Olsen twins’ television movies, What Katy Did and Switching Goals, in that same year.
In the 2009 independent romance comedy Paper Heart, Cera portrayed a fictionalized version of himself. It looked at the made-up relationship between Cera and herself as the film’s writer, Charlyne Yi. The film’s soundtrack was written by Cera and Yi jointly. That year, Cera starred in the Stone Age comedy Year One with Jack Black.
