About Mitchell Rales

American businessman, art collector, and philanthropist Mitchell P. Rales. He co-founded Danaher Corporation with his brother Steven Rales in 1984, and he currently serves as the executive committee’s chairman. Rales is also the founder of Glenstone, his home and art museum, as well as the chairman of Enovis and ESAB. He is also the president of the National Gallery of Art.

Rales was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in August 1956. He studied at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland, where he graduated in 1974. He led their baseball and football teams as captain. Rales took a degree in business organisation at Miami College in 1978 and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi clique.

Rales, along with his brother Steven Rales, founded Equity Group Holdings in 1979 after leaving his father’s real estate company. Utilising garbage bonds, they purchased a differentiated line of organisations. Diversified Mortgage Investors was the new name in 1978, and Danaher was the new name in 1984.

Rales acquired the AM portion of radio station WGMS in the 1980s and turned it into the sports-talk station WTEM in 1992. He attempted to acquire Interco, Inc. in 1988, which was the largest furniture and men’s shoe manufacturer in the nation at the time. After 5 months, he ended the bid with a $60 million profit. Rales and his brother established Colfax Corporation, which is now known as Enovis, in 1995.

From July 2016 to June 2021, Rales served on Fortive’s board of directors and is a majority shareholder. In 2023, Rales was a piece of a venture bunch driven by Josh Harris that agreed to buy the Washington Leaders, an American football team having a place with the Public Football Association (NFL), for $6.05 billion. At a league meeting at the end of May, it is expected that the deal, which is the largest ever for a sports franchise, will be approved.
