Nassef Sawiris Career

Nassef Onsi Sawiris was the youngest of three sons born to Yousiriyya and Onsi Sawiris on January 19, 1961, in Cairo, Egypt. In 1950, his father, a lawyer’s son, had established a construction company. President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalised the company in 1961, changing its name to El Nasr Civil Works Company. Onsi moved to Libya to start a new general contracting business after becoming dissatisfied with being made an employee at his own company.

Egypt-Libya relations soured after the Camp David Accords were signed, and Sawiris returned to Egypt to take over the family business. Orascom Construction Industries is the brand-new company that Onsi established. By the middle of the 1990s, Orascom had become one of the largest private builders in Egypt thanks to partnerships with international businesses working on local projects.

He bought the Egyptian Fertilizer Company in the same year to get into the fertiliser industry. Through the extension of its own tasks and acquisitions, Orascom’s compost activity developed to turn into the world’s third-biggest nitrogen-based manure maker.
