Kirsh began utilising Moshal Gevisser to supply goods to black shopkeepers because the apartheid government of South Africa at the time prohibited white business owners from operating in black townships. Moshal Gevisser became a major food retailer in South Africa as a cash and carry business.
He opened Jetro, a cash and carry establishment in Brooklyn, New York, in June 1976. He bought Restaurant Depot in 1994, opened its first store in New York in 1995, and started Jetro Holdings with Restaurant Depot as a sister company. Warren Buffett bought a minority stake in Jetro Holdings in 2003, but he and Kirsh couldn’t agree on the terms.
