Carl Stefan Erling Persson is a billionaire businessman in Swedish. Persson was the chairman of the fashion company H&M until May 2020, when he was succeeded by his son. He remains the organisation’s biggest investor, claiming a 36% stake. Erling Persson, his father, established the business in 1947. In 1982, Persson purchased H&M from his father and held the position of manager there until 1998.

He owns a sizable portion of the Swedish technology company Hexagon AB. Persson owns numerous properties in Stockholm, Paris, and London through Ramsbury Invest, a privately held real estate company. He is the only director of Ramsbury Estates Limited, which farms 19,000 acres (7,700 ha) in Wiltshire, Berkshire, and Hampshire, with the village of Ramsbury in Wiltshire at its centre. He has had a successful career as a business executive, serving as the chairman of Hennes & Mauritz AB (H&M) from 1998 to 2020 and its CEO from 1982 to 1998. Persson’s father, Erling Persson, founded Hennes, a women’s clothing store, in Vasteras, Sweden, in 1947. Stefan learned the art of fashion retailing from his father, and the company soon expanded to Stockholm and gained a reputation as a leading fashion brand in the Swedish market. Eventually, Hennes expanded its business to other European countries, becoming a fixture in the fashion industry.

In 1968, H&M acquired Mauritz Widforss, a Swedish hunting-gear retailer, which led to the addition of men’s clothing to their product line. The company became commonly known as H&M after this acquisition. In 1972, Persson joined the family business and played a significant role in expanding the company’s presence in Europe. He was present when H&M opened its first store in London in 1976. When his father became the chairman of the board, Persson assumed the role of H&M’s managing director and CEO in 1982.

Persson, the founder of Mentor Foundation, is devoted to the cause of preventing substance abuse among young people through a non-profit organisation. Also, he is a supporter of Djurgardens IF and is also contributing towards funding a foundation for the club. In his leisure time, Persson indulges in skiing, tennis and golf. He is the proud owner of properties in three major cities – London, Paris and Stockholm, and in 2009, he purchased the quaint 21-cottage village of Linkenholt in Hampshire, England.
