Sydney Bernice Sweeney was born on September 12 1997, in Washington. Her mother is a former criminal defence attorney, while her father works in the hospitality industry. Trent is her brother. Sweeney grew up in northwestern Idaho’s Panhandle region, near the Washington border, in a rustic lakeside home that her family has lived in for five generations. Sweeney has stated that she comes from a “religious family.”
Sweeney’s debut started with guest roles on TV shows like 90210, Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, and Pretty Little Liars. Sweeney portrayed Emaline Addario in Netflix’s Everything Sucks!, which followed two sets of high school kids in Oregon in 1996. She then appears as Alice, a roommate whom Amy Adams’ character meets at a psychiatric facility, in the HBO drama Sharp Objects.
Her character was supposed to play a minor role, but the director kept calling her back for more sequences. Sweeney prepared for the part by researching stories of girls who suffered from mental illness and self-harm, as well as visiting hospitals with patients who self-harmed. She shot Everything Sucks! and Sharp Objects at the same time, the former during the week and the latter on weekends.
