He studied at the Lomonosov Moscow State University Advanced Education and Science Centre before enrolling in the Moscow State University Faculty of Physics in 1989. Melnichenko co-founded the MDM Bank in 1993 at the age of 21. Developing a derivatives market and debt instruments, the bank continued to buy currency at the interbank foreign exchange. Melnichenko presided over MDM Bank’s Board of Directors from 1993 to 1997.
