After submitting an unsuccessful application to the music department, he transferred to the University of British Columbia in 1971 as a mathematics student. Seven years later, he graduated from the University of Waterloo in Canada with a master’s degree and a doctorate in computer science. He spent three years as an assistant professor at UBC before moving to Stanford in 1982.
