Bren was the President of MVC from 1963 to 1967. In 1970, International Paper purchased the Bren Co. for $34 million, but the recession forced them to sell it back to Bren for $22 million in 1972.

Bren expressed his support for two politicians from different political parties in California, namely Republican Pete Wilson during his Senate and governorship campaigns, and Democrat Dianne Feinstein, whom he highly regards as a great senator for the state.
