The concessions made by other countries were initially unaffected, but when the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor in 1941, British and American residents were sent to internment camps. He circulated the materials that had been held onto by the Japanese to purchasers in northern China. After the war ended in 1946, he was found guilty of working with the Japanese to sell scrap metal and leather goods to the Japanese government. However, on appeal to the Supreme Court of the Republic of China the following year, he was found not guilty.
