John Sobrato was born to Ann Ainardi (1915–2000) and John Mossimo Sobrato (1895–1952), two Italian immigrants. Even though he was 20 years older than Sobrato, Sobrato’s parents met in the 1930s and got married in 1938. John’s Rendezvous, a well-known restaurant in San Francisco, belonged to Sobrato’s father. When Sobrato’s father passed away from cancer in 1952, his mother sold the restaurant and started investing in real estate with the money.

Sobrato received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Santa Clara University. He then started his own business, the Sobrato Organization, which has built millions of square feet of commercial, office, and residential space throughout Silicon Valley and beyond.

Sobrato began his own real estate investing business. He began working closely with Carl Berg, another successful Silicon Valley investor, in 1972 and continued for many years. In 1979, he established the Sobrato Organization; his child, John Michael Sobrato, took over the administration of the organisation in 1998.

The business grew to include more than 30 apartment communities and 110 commercial buildings. Both father and son made the announcement in 2013 that they would focus on charitable endeavours rather than managing the company’s operations.
