Lui has been recognized for his dedication to education and philanthropic efforts through the bestowal of several honorary degrees. The University of Victoria granted him a Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa in 2001, while the Chinese University of Hong Kong conferred upon him a Doctor of Social Science, Honoris Causa, in 2002. Lui served as the chair of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals during 1981-1982.
