Mathew Randall Ishbia is an American very rich person money manager who is Chief and executive of home loan bank Joined Discount Home loan. On February 6, 2023, he and his older brother Justin were finalised as majority owners of the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association and the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association.

Ishbia was born in Birmingham, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, on January 6, 1980, to a Jewish family. From 1999 to 2002, he attended Michigan State as a walk-on point guard and was a part of the team that won the national championship in 2000. He took over as CEO of United Wholesale Mortgage, which his father started in 1986, in 2013. He became a billionaire when the company went public in January 2021.

Ishbia’s bid to acquire the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury basketball teams for $4 billion, subject to league approval, was accepted by suspended team owner Robert Sarver in December 2022. After Robert Pera of the Memphis Grizzlies, he became the NBA’s second youngest team owner at the age of 43. The NBA nearly unanimously approved the sale on February 6, 2023, before it became official on February 7.

Ishbia made the largest one-time gift to Michigan State University, a donation of $32 million, on February 4, 2021. Ishbia gave the V Foundation for Cancer Research $1 million on March 12, a month later.

In 2021, he also made the controversial announcement that UWM would no longer collaborate with any broker or bank that also did business with Rocket Mortgage or the Fairway Independent Mortgage Group, which are UWM’s rivals in the mortgage industry.

This prompted him to have a competition with Dan Gilbert and Rocket Home loan, with Gilbert being the main NBA proprietor to swear off casting a ballot to support Ishbia’s responsibility for Phoenix Suns in February 2023.
