The Related Companies, a global real estate development firm Ross founded in 1972, has Ross as chairman and majority owner. Related is best known for building the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project and the Deutsche Bank Center, where Ross lives and works.

Ross was born on May 10, 1940, and he grew up in a Jewish household in Detroit. He began his education at Detroit’s Mumford High School and later earned his diploma from Miami Beach Senior High School. He spent two years at the University of Florida before moving to the University of Michigan, where he graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Stephen Michael Ross went on to earn his Juris Doctor in 1965 from Wayne State University and his Master of Laws in Taxation in 1966 from New York University School of Law.

Ross began his livelihood as an obligation legal counsellor at Coopers and Lybrand in Detroit. After moving to New York City in 1968, he worked in Bear Stearns’ corporate finance department before accepting an assistant vice president position in the real estate subsidiary of Laird Inc. Ross has described his uncle Max Fisher, a businessman, as “the most important role model and inspiration for me in life,” who provided funding for these subsequent degrees through a loan.

In 1972, Ross established The Connected Organizations, a land improvement organisation. Related has offices and real estate developments in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, South Florida, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai in addition to its headquarters in New York City. About 2,000 people directly work for the company.
