Gores was born on July 31, 1964, in Nazareth, Israel. He was the fifth of six children in a Catholic family whose mother was of Lebanese and Greek descent. His father was Greek. He and his family moved from Nazareth to Genesee, Michigan, 10 miles northeast of Flint, when he was about five years old. Stocking shelves at his uncle’s Genesee grocery store was his first job. Gores played guard in basketball, middle infielder in baseball, and defensive back in football while attending Genesee High School.
