Alekperov was born on September 1, 1950, in Baku, Azerbaijan, which was then part of the Soviet Union. Vagit Alekperov’s father worked in the oil fields throughout his life and passed away when Vagit was still young. Growing up, Vagit was inspired by his father’s work and decided to continue a career in the same field. His father was an Azerbaijani Muslim, while his mother was Russian Orthodox. Although Alekperov is a religious person, he prefers not to identify himself as either Muslim or Orthodox.

In 1990, Vagit Alekperov became the youngest deputy energy minister in Soviet history when he was appointed as the deputy minister of the Oil and Gas Industry of the Soviet Union. Alekperov pushed for state-owned energy companies with vertical integration at the time. This move brought together a wide range of organisations in the energy sector, which at the time were accountable to different bureaucratic institutions within the Soviet government.

Vagit Alekperov took over as President and Chairman of the Board of LUKOIL, a joint-stock company when Langepas-Uray-Kogalymneft was renamed in April 1993. By 2002, Alekperov had acquired 10.4% ownership of the company. Notably, LUKOIL became the first Russian company to acquire an American company in November 2000, when it purchased Getty Petroleum Marketing, including its 1,300 gas stations in the United States. Alekperov has also ventured into banking and media, like many other Russian oligarchs.
