Woody Johnson Career

Johnson was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the great-grandson of Robert Wood Johnson I, the founder of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company, and the son of Betty Johnson and Robert Wood Johnson III. After graduating from the University of Arizona, he spent the summer working at Johnson & Johnson.

The Johnson Company, Inc., a private investment firm, had Johnson as its chairman and chief executive officer. In August 2006, Johnson was approached to affirm before the Senate’s Super durable Subcommittee on Examinations with respect to his cooperation in an expense evasion conspiracy. According to a report from the Senate, Johnson and others were able to purchase approximately $2 billion in capital losses for relatively low fees, which they used to offset taxable gains from stock sales.

Johnson paid $635 million for the New York Jets in January 2000, the third-highest price ever paid for a professional sports team and the highest price ever paid for a New York professional sports team. Charles Dolan, the owner of Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks, and the New York Rangers, made an offer of $612 million, which Johnson outbid.

Johnson announced his intention to relocate the Jets to the proposed West Side Stadium in Manhattan after purchasing the team. However, Johnson announced that the Jets would relocate to a new Meadowlands Stadium as an equal partner with the Giants following the project’s defeat in 2005. MetLife purchased the naming rights for the new stadium, which opened on April 10, 2010.
