From 2017 to 2021, American businessman Robert Wood Johnson IV served as ambassador to the United Kingdom. He is a successor to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune and Robert Wood Johnson I’s great-grandson. In 2000, he purchased the New York Jets football team, which he now shares with his brother, Christopher Johnson. Charles Dolan, the owner of Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks, and the New York Rangers, made an offer of $612 million, which Johnson outbid.
Johnson announced his intention to relocate the Jets to the proposed West Side Stadium in Manhattan after purchasing the team. However, Johnson announced that the Jets would relocate to a new Meadowlands Stadium as an equal partner with the Giants following the project’s defeat in 2005. MetLife purchased the naming rights for the new stadium, which opened on April 10, 2010.
