Bidzina Ivanishvili is a billionaire businessman and Georgian politician who served as Prime Minister of Georgia from October 2012 until November 2013. During the 1990s, Ivanishvili built a collection of iron ore producers, steel plants, banks, and real estate to make his fortune in post-Soviet Russia. Between 2003 and 2006, he sold the majority of his assets, with the remainder being sold prior to his election as Georgia’s prime minister in October 2012. In 1956, Bidzina Ivanishvili was created in the town of Chorvila, a former Soviet republic of Georgia. He earned a degree in engineering and economics from Tbilisi State University in 1980 and graduated with honours. Ivanishvili relocated to Moscow and completed his studies at the Scientific and Research Institute of Labour in 1986, earning a candidate’s degree. He went back to Tbilisi and got a job at the Georgia Institute of Labour branch there.

The billionaire settled in Moscow in the late 1980s, and in 1990 he established Rossiysky Kredit Bank. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he amassed interests in several Russian state-owned companies, such as the Orlovsky steel mill and the iron ore producers Stoylensky and Mikhailovsky GOKs.

Over the ensuing ten years, he bought closely held assets. He founded the Impex bank, the Doctor Stoletov retail pharmacy network, and Stoylenskaya Niva, the third-largest flour producer in Russia, by the early 2000s. In Moscow, he also made investments in real estate projects and property development. In 2005, he returned to Georgia and began to back Mikheil Saakashvili, who had just been elected president the year before.

After quickly growing tired of Saakashvili’s policies, he founded the Georgian Dream, his own political party, in 2011. He sold the remaining Russian assets as he prepared to run for office, making over $1.5 billion. In October 2012, Ivanishvili, who resides in Tbilisi with his wife and four children, was chosen prime minister by a coalition that was led by his party and received 55% of the vote. After serving in office for a year, he resigned in November 2013.
