Joseph Tsai is a billionaire lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist from Taiwan and Canada. In addition to owning the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA), he is a co-founder and executive vice chairman of the Chinese global innovation organisation Alibaba Group, the New York Freedom of the Ladies’ Public Ball Affiliation, the San Diego Marks of the Public Lacrosse Association, and has interests in a few other pro athletics establishments. Tsai has both Hong Kong and Canadian passports.

Ruby Tsai and Paul C. Tsai, a second-generation lawyer, gave birth to Tsai in Taipei, Taiwan. Three of his younger siblings are Eva, Vivian, and Benjamin. In 1949, during the Chinese Civil War, the communists took control of Mainland China and the Tsai family fled to Taiwan as part of the Kuomintang exodus.

Tsai worked as a tax associate at Sullivan & Cromwell, a prestigious legal firm, after graduating. On May 6, 1991, he was admitted to the New York Bar as an attorney. After three years, he resigned from the legal firm and changed to private equity. He joined Rosecliff, Inc., a New York-based small management buyout firm, as vice president and general attorney.

In 1995, he moved to Hong Kong to work for the Swedish Wallenberg family’s investment conglomerate Investor AB. There, he was in charge of the company’s investments in Asian private equity. In September 2019, Tsai turned into the proprietor of the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA and executive of Barclays Center.

In October 2017, he made his first investment in the NBA team, purchasing a 49% stake in the Nets from Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov in a deal valued at $2.3 billion. He had the option to purchase the remaining stake of the team by 2021.
