About Joseph Tsai
Joseph Tsai is a billionaire lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist from Taiwan and Canada. In addition to owning the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA), he is a co-founder and executive vice chairman of the Chinese global innovation organisation Alibaba Group, the New York Freedom of the Ladies’ Public Ball Affiliation, the San Diego Marks of the Public Lacrosse Association, and has interests in a few other pro athletics establishments. Tsai has both Hong Kong and Canadian passports.

Ruby Tsai and Paul C. Tsai, a second-generation lawyer, gave birth to Tsai in Taipei, Taiwan. Three of his younger siblings are Eva, Vivian, and Benjamin. In 1949, during the Chinese Civil War, the communists took control of Mainland China and the Tsai family fled to Taiwan as part of the Kuomintang exodus.

At age 13, Tsai went off to the U.S. to go to the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he played both lacrosse and football and was an individual from Cleve House. Tsai enlisted at his dad’s institute of matriculation, Yale College. He played for the Yale varsity lacrosse crew for a long time and has stayed an ally of the group.

Tsai worked as a tax associate at Sullivan & Cromwell, a prestigious legal firm, after graduating. On May 6, 1991, he was admitted to the New York Bar as an attorney. After three years, he resigned from the legal firm and changed to private equity. He joined Rosecliff, Inc., a New York-based small management buyout firm, as vice president and general attorney.
In 1995, he moved to Hong Kong to work for the Swedish Wallenberg family’s investment conglomerate Investor AB. There, he was in charge of the company’s investments in Asian private equity. In September 2019, Tsai turned into the proprietor of the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA and executive of Barclays Center.
In October 2017, he made his first investment in the NBA team, purchasing a 49% stake in the Nets from Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov in a deal valued at $2.3 billion. He had the option to purchase the remaining stake of the team by 2021.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, between the end of March and the beginning of April, the Tsais gave New York 2.6 million masks, 170,000 goggles, and 2,000 ventilators. They gave San Diego hospitals $1.6 million in medical supplies on April 20, 2020. In 2017 Yale University presented Tsai with the George H.W. Bush ’48 Lifetime of Leadership Award.
