Leclerc led Sauber’s charge to finish eighth in the Constructors’ Championship after finishing last the year before, and he was the higher-ranked of the two Sauber drivers. Herve, his father, was a racing car driver who competed in Formula 3 in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 2005, Leclerc began competing in karting. Three years later, he won the French PACA Championship. Before stepping up to the KF3 class in 2010 and winning the Junior Monaco Kart Cup, he won the French Cadet title in 2009. He participated in the KF3 division in 2011 and took home the ERDF Junior Kart Masters, CIK-FIA KF3 World Cup, and CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. Leclerc also joined Nicolas Todt’s All Road Management company over the course of the year.

Leclerc switched to single-seaters in 2014 and competed for the British team Fortec Motorsports in the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps championship. During the season, he took seven platform positions, including a twofold triumph at Monza, to wrap up in the title behind Koiranen GP’s Nyck de Vries. Charles Leclerc and fellow GP3 racer and Ferrari junior Antonio Fuoco were both confirmed to be transitioning to the Formula 2 series for the 2017 season with Prema Racing the week after his victory in the GP3 title race.

Leclerc was signed by Scuderia Ferrari for the 2019 season, taking the place of Sauber’s 2007 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen. Leclerc’s contract was initially only announced for 2019, but a few days later, then-Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene said that it would be for four seasons, “at least until 2022.”
