Schmidt worked as an intern at Bell Labs in 1975 and was a co-author of Lex, a Unix software program that made lexical analyzers. He was Novell’s chief executive officer (CEO) from 1997 to 2001. He has been on a number of other boards in business and academia, including the Mayo Clinic, Carnegie Mellon University, Apple, and Princeton University’s boards of trustees. With his insightful leadership and innovative ideas, he helped turn Google into one of the most valuable and influential companies in the world.

After earning eight varsity letter awards in long-distance running, Schmidt graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington County, Virginia, in 1972. He then attended Princeton University, starting majoring in architecture before switching to electrical engineering and earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in 1976.
