Michael Whitaker Smith was born on October 7, 1957. His father worked at the Ashland Oil Refinery in nearby Catlettsburg, Kentucky, which was an oil refinery. His mother ran a restaurant. His father, who had played in the minor leagues, passed down his passion for baseball to him. Through his church, he discovered a passion for music as a child.
He took piano lessons at a young age and sang in the church choir.
