About Jiang Weiping

Jiang Weiping is a veteran central area Chinese journalist known universally for his capture by the Chinese Socialist Coalition in 2001. In 1999, he started sending stories regarding Communist Party corruption and reports on Bo Xilai to the Frontline magazine in Hong Kong. On charges of revealing state secrets, he was arrested in December 2000 and given an eight-year prison sentence. However, in 2006, he was granted early release. After a time of house capture, he emigrated to Canada in 2009.

Weiping was born in 1955. Jiang received his degree in history from the University of Liaoning. He worked as a reporter for Xinhua News Agency in the 1980s. His first story, about Bo Xilai, a CCP official in a small town, was published in 1984. Jiang was promoted to the position of Northeastern China bureau chief of the pro-Beijing Wen Wei Po Hong Kong newspaper at the beginning of the 1990s.

Jiang published 8 reports alleging corruption by various Chinese officials in the middle of 1999 in the Hong Kong magazine Front Line. Composing under the pseudonym “Wen Qingtian”, Jiang expressed that while city chairman of Dalian, Bo Xilai took care of defilement by his significant other Gu Kailai, whose law office had dealt with various government improvement and land bargains.

Another article, named “Previous Daqing City Hall leader Qian Dihua Captured: According to “The Richest Man in the Area Who Kept 29 Mistresses,” a mayor had used state funds to buy cars and apartments for mistresses, and a third person said that deputy mayor of Shenyang Ma Xiangdong had lost US$3 million while gambling in Macau. Even though Jiang wrote under a pseudonym, authorities quickly located him. He was kept in December 2000 on charges of uncovering “state mysteries”. Jiang claims that one day after agreeing to represent him, his lawyer was also detained. On September 5, 2001, he was tracked down in a mysterious preliminary, and condemned to eight years’ detainment. The Liaoning Province Higher People’s Court later reduced the term to six years.

On January 3, 2006, Jiang was set free from jail and put under informal house capture. He was granted permission to leave for Canada in 2009. While working as a Scholar at Risk at Massey College, he settled in Toronto.

In June 2012, Knopf Canada announced that it would publish Jiang’s biography of Bo Xilai, who had just gained international attention after his better half Gu Kailai was tried and found guilty of murdering English hedge fund manager Neil Heywood.
