American software developer and billionaire businessman Jim Goodnight Since 1976, he has been CEO of SAS Institute, a leading software company for business analytics. With over 14,000 employees and operations in over 60 countries, SAS has grown to become one of the largest privately held software companies in the world under his leadership. On January 6, 1943, Goodnight was born in Salisbury, North Carolina, to Albert Goodnight and Dorothy Patterson. When he was 12 years old, his family moved to Wilmington from Greensboro. He worked at his father’s hardware store as a child.

A computer course at North Carolina State University was the beginning of Goodnight’s career in the computer industry. He worked as a software developer for the agricultural economics department one summer. Goodnight was a member of the NC State Beta-Beta chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon. In 2002, he helped build the chapter of a new fraternity house.

In 1968, Goodnight earned a master’s degree in statistics. He likewise worked at an organisation building electronic gear for the ground stations that spoke with the Apollo space containers. While chipping away at the Apollo program, Goodnight encountered a workplace with a high turnover rate and this moulded his perspectives on corporate culture. After working on the Apollo project, Goodnight went back to North Carolina State University, where he got his PhD in statistics and taught there from 1972 to 1976.
