Mikhail Dmitrievich Prokhorov is a politician, oligarch, and Russian-Israeli oligarch who used to own the Brooklyn Nets. Prokhorov is said to have obtained Israeli citizenship in April 2022. In Russia’s contentious loans-for-shares privatisation program, Prokhorov acquired Russian state-owned metals assets following the fall of the Soviet Union at prices far below market value.

Norilsk Nickel, his company, rose to become the world’s largest producer of palladium and nickel. He was the former president of Onexim Group and the chairman of Russia’s largest gold producer, Polyus Gold. Prokhorov ran for president of Russia in 2012 as an independent candidate in 2011. With 7.94% of the vote, he came in third in the voting. He announced in June 2012 that a new Russian political party would be called Civic Platform.
