Schmidheiny was born in 1945, into a group of industrialists in Balgach, Switzerland. In the early 20th century, Ernst invested in a cement company and an asbestos processing company. Over the course of more than seven decades, Max, his father, and Ernst, his uncle, expanded the business.

Schmidheiny resigned as chairman as part of a settlement to an investigation into insider trading in Spain.

He has stayed on the Load up since that time. Thomas Schmidheiny, the largest shareholder of Lafarge-Holcim, has retained 11.4% of the company since the merger between Holcim and Lafarge. When their father divided his estate between them in 1984, the billionaire received Holcim, the largest cement manufacturer in the world, and his brother Stephan received Eternit, an asbestos processing company.

After paying a fine of $1.5 million for insider trading in 2003, the billionaire quit his position as chairman of Holcim. After learning of a pending takeover bid by Xstrata, the mining company for which he was a board member, he bought shares in the metals producer Asturiana de Zinc in 2000, which led to an investigation by the Spanish government.
