In 1938, Alain Merieux was born in France. After spending time in Louis Pasteur’s laboratory in 1897, his great-grandfather Marcel founded the Institut Merieux as a serum laboratory on a farm close to Lyon.
In 1963, Merieux co-founded BD Merieux with Becton Dickinson. The company, which specialises in biological diagnostic work, was renamed BioMerieux in 1974 after Merieux acquired a controlling stake.
As the first vice-president of the board of the Rhone-Alpes region from 1986 to 1998, Alain Merieux was in charge of international contacts, economic development, research, and secondary education. He has also been active in politics in France.
Several of France’s greatest honours, including the Legion d’Honneur in 2004, have been bestowed on the billionaire. He has three sons and resides in France with his wife. Rudolph, his middle son, perished in a flying accident in 1996. Christophe, the eldest son, passed away after a heart attack in 2006. In December 2017, his third son, Alexandre, was named chairman and CEO of BioMerieux.
