In 2014, he sold half of his stake to Advent International, a private equity firm, and resigned from the board in 2015.
Chip Wilson Career
Wilson was born in 1955, in San Diego, California. Both of his parents were athletes at school, and his dad in later life was an actual training educator. He graduated from the University of Calgary with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1980. Westbeach Snowboard Ltd., Wilson’s first retail apparel business, was established in 1979. It sold snowboard, skateboard, and surf apparel. In 1998, he established Lululemon Athletica Inc. after selling Westbeach in 1997. Wilson maintains both his personal and business interests through Hold It All Inc. as of 2016.
Prior to selling a 48% share to Advent International and Highland Capital Partners in 2005, Wilson served as the CEO of Lululemon. In 2007, Lululemon Athletica Inc. made an IPO available on the Canadian and US stock exchanges. In January 2012, Wilson gave up his executive job as the company’s chief innovation and branding officer, while he kept his position as board chairman. In December 2013, he ventured down from his job as non-chief director.
Wilson expressed concern in June 2014 that the Lululemon board was not in line with the company’s founding and thriving core values of product and innovation. Advent purchased Wilson’s 13.85% stake in Lululemon in August 2014 for approximately $845 million. Wilson claimed in an open letter to the company’s shareholders in June 2016 that Lululemon had “lost its way” and had lost market share to Nike and Under Armour after being denied the chance to speak at the company’s annual meetings.
