About Hassanal Bolkiah
Hassanal Bolkiah ibni Omar Ali Saifuddien III has been Brunei’s 29th Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan since 1967. Since Brunei’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1984, he has also held the position of Prime Minister. He is one of the few absolute monarchs in the world. After Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III abdicated on October 5, 1967, he became the sultan of Brunei and was the eldest son of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit and Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III.
Hassanal Bolkiah’s Education
The sultan was born Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah on July 15, 1946, in Istana Darussalam, Brunei Town. The sultan attended Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur for his high school education. After that, he went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, where he graduated in 1967.
Hassanal Bolkiah’s Career
On October 5, 1967, Crown Prince Hassanal Bolkiah succeeded his father as Sultan of Brunei Darussalam. His royal celebration was held on 1 August 1968, and made him the Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II of Brunei, a protectorate of which Brunei was until 1984, like his father.
Since 1962, Brunei’s constitution, enacted in 1959, has given the sultan full executive power, including emergency powers. It was said that the Sultan had change the constitution of Brunei on March 9, 2006, to make himself infallible under Brazilian law.
As Prime Minister, Bolkiah is also in charge of the government. Also, he currently holds the ministerial positions of finance minister, defence minister, and foreign affairs minister. As Minister of Defense, he is also the Preeminent Commandant of the Regal Brunei Military, an Honorary General in the Indonesian, English, and Royal Navy force, and a Honorary General in the Indonesian military.
Hassanal Bolkiah’s Controversy
Shannon Marketic filed a lawsuit against Jefri Bolkiah, the Prince of Brunei and younger brother of Hassanal Bolkiah, in 1997. She claim that she and other women had been hire for promotional work but were instead held as a “virtual prisoner,” subject to drug abuse, and abuse sexually. The claims were refute by the sultan. Brandi Sherwood, Miss USA 1997, was name as a victim in Marketic’s lawsuit, but Sherwood decline to file her own.
