James Allen Pattison is a Canadian business tycoon and investor. He is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he is the chief executive officer, chairman, and sole owner of the Jim Pattison Group. The Jim Pattison Group is Canada’s second-largest privately held business, employing over 45,000 people worldwide and making $10.1 billion in annual sales. In recognition of Canada’s 125th anniversary, Pattison received the Governor General’s Commemorative Medal and was inducted into the Walk of Fame in December 2018. He had also been given the Order of Canada in 1987 and the Order of British Columbia in 1990.

James Allen Pattison was born on October 1, 1928. When Pattison was born at a hospital in Saskatoon, his parents lived in the rural town of Luseland, Saskatchewan. When Pattison was six years old, the family moved to East Vancouver, English Columbia. During the summers, however, he returned to Saskatchewan. Throughout his time in high school, Pattison worked as a page boy at the Georgia Hotel, delivered newspapers, sold seeds door-to-door, and sold doughnuts in the school parking lot. He moved on from John Oliver Auxiliary School in 1947.

Pattison worked as a car salesman at Richmond Motors in British Columbia in the summer of 1948, when he was taking a break from school. However, his main job was to wash cars. He worked for the Vancouver-based used car dealer Kingsway in the summer of 1949. By 1961, he was able to use his sales skills to convince a manager of a Royal Bank branch to lend him $40,000 to open a Pontiac dealership on Main Street near his elementary school, which was significantly more than the branch’s lending limit.
