Renren is the new name given to the website by its new owners. Wang developed Fanfou, a Chinese version of Twitter, in 2007. It was China’s first major microblogging site, but the government quickly took it down due to political-sensitive content.

On Fanfou, a social media platform Wang owns, on May 3, 2021, Wang posted a poem from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) about book burning. This was widely interpreted as a covert attack on the Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping’s administration’s clampdown on intellectual and academic freedom since his election. The sonnet, named “Book Consuming Pit” talks about the late ruler Qin Shi Huang’s act of executing researchers and consuming books, just to be ousted by unskilled agitators later during his rule.
